Top soccer games to be played at Wolfson Stadium

Soccer lovers in Kwazakhele and surrounding areas will soon be treated to top-class Premier Soccer League matches on their doorstep. Chippa United plan to bring two of their home fixtures to Wolfson Stadium.

Wolfson hosted two of Chippa’s home league fixtures last season with games featuring Maritzburg United and Platinum Stars. The Port Elizabeth-based side will play Ajax Cape Town and their last home game for the season against Supersport United at the stadium.

It has also hosted an international friendly match between the Chilli Boys and Wolfsburg.

Chippa United chief operations officer, Lukhanyo Mzinzi said taking some of their small home league fixtures to the Kwazakhele stadium had been part of their relocation contract from the start.

However, the stadium had not been in good shape to host PSL matches and had also been used by rugby and football clubs.

“They [the municipality] have closed the stadium over the past few years,” Mzinzi said.

“We have played a few games and even hosted an international friendly against Wolfsburg, but the pitch condition was not perfect.

“Now the municipality has done a good job with the stadium. They have built world-class dressing rooms, they have worked on the pitch and they have improved certain aspects that were requested by the PSL. There is still more to do, but the stadium is up to PSL standard.”

Before getting the thumbs-up from the PSL the stadium had needed certain improvements and the municipality had been hard at work to make sure the stadium was in top condition, he said.

The only issue still outstanding is the lights. They do not conform to PSL standards so the stadium can only accommodate day-time matches.

“The municipality has committed to sort out the lights issue in the next financial year. Most of our home fixtures are played at night and Wolfson does not yet have PSL-standard lights,” Mzinzi said.

“However, we are glad to announce that there are two games that we are taking to the stadium.

“The Ajax Cape Town and Supersport United matches will be played at Wolfson later in the season.

“We hope that those two games will draw numbers of spectators and also allow our people in the area to celebrate Chippa United.

“Wolfson Stadium is going to feature very much in our plans going forward, especially after the lights have been passed.

“From next season the stadium will feature permanently in the Chippa schedule.”

Municipal executive director of sport, recreation, arts and culture, Noxolo Nqwazi, said the municipality had budgeted to make sure the Wolfson Stadium adhered to PSL standards.

She also said they had committed themselves to fix the light issue at the stadium in the next financial year.

“Our key objective as the municipality is to set up a sporting institution that will bring development in the area. We want Wolfson Stadium to be Chippa’s slaughterhouse.”

Chippa United have already tested the pitch, as they held their training session at the stadium yesterday.

Their MDC side will also play Free State Stars at Wolfson tomorrow.

Mzinzi said the municipality had committed to take good care of the stadium so that it stayed in top shape.

“They [the municipality] have closed off the pitch only on certain bookings about which most of the time we are consulted also.

“We are not saying that Wolfson should not be used by other people but it must be used professionally and inspiringly.”

He said the team had enjoyed their stay in the province since relocating three years ago.

“The EC has been good to this club. We don’t even remember that we are from Cape Town because some of us, in fact 90%t of the management, are from the Eastern Cape.

“This is our home for the next 20-odd years. The support from the municipality and from the entire province has been overwhelming.

“I must say even with the change of political leadership it has not affected us. Even the new leadership is supporting us very much,” Mzinzi said.

“They have put in means to make sure that the club remains at a high level and structurally they have been supporting us. There have been some changes with regard to the company that is managing the stadium. All that process is being handled very well and very smoothly.”
