The death of Bonke Meyile, a 34-year-old Audit Senior at the Auditor-General of South Africa, has sparked widespread concern and outrage.

Bonke died on May 18, 2025, while in custody at the Gonubie Police Station in East London. According to reports, he was arrested following an altercation with guests at his apartment, but the circumstances surrounding his arrest and death are shrouded in mystery.

His family and friends have disputed the police’s account of his death, which claims he hanged himself using a police belt. They point out that he was not wearing a belt when arrested, fueling suspicions that the belt may have been planted to stage a suicide.

An investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) revealed that a police belt was indeed used in the alleged suicide, further raising questions about the police’s handling of the case.

The Justice for Bonke Meyile collective is rallying support to raise awareness about this case and ensure that the police officers on duty that morning are held accountable. The family and supporters firmly believe that his death was a result of foul play and are determined to get to the bottom of it. As the investigation continues, many are calling for transparency and accountability from the police department.

Bonke was a respected professional in the auditing and financial services sector, with over eight years of experience.

He held a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from the University of the Western Cape and a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Accounting from the University of South Africa.

At the time of his death, he was serving as an Audit Senior at the Auditor-General of South Africa, where he applied international auditing standards and led key engagements focused on accountability in the public sector.
