The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has seized luxury assets, including high-end vehicles and artwork, from businessman Hangwani Maumela’s mansion in Sandton.

This operation is part of an investigation into alleged corruption at Tembisa Hospital. The SIU is seeking to recover over R820 million in assets linked to Hangwani.

A video showcasing Hangwani’s mansion, which was featured on Top Billing, highlights the luxurious lifestyle he allegedly maintained through corrupt means. The video features a bespoke interior design, including a glass staircase, curated artwork, and custom-made furniture.

The SIU’s investigation has uncovered corruption and maladministration worth over R2 billion linked to Tembisa Hospital’s procurement processes. The Asset Forfeiture Unit has already seized assets worth R325 million, including luxurious vehicles, high-end properties, and boats. The SIU is working to recover more assets and bring those responsible to justice.

The SIU’s actions have been welcomed by some as a step towards accountability and consequence management in South Africa’s battle against public sector graft. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) may press criminal charges against Hangwani and his alleged accomplices. The case serves as a test for the government’s commitment to fighting corruption and recovering stolen public funds.

Hangwani Maumela is a businessman and alleged kingpin behind the multibillion-rand corruption scandal at Tembisa Hospital. The hospital has been at the center of a massive corruption scandal, resulting in the loss of over R2 billion in public funds.
