Medical Students’ Darkly Comedic Simulation Sparks Laughter Online

Third-year medical students at the University of Cape Town showcased their skills in a simulated case that left many in stitches.

The students used a medical manikin representing notorious convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester, who, along with Dr. Nandipha Magudumana, is currently awaiting trial for various crimes, including Thabo’s prison escape in 2022.

In the simulation, the students treated “Mr. Bester,” who had allegedly injured himself during a prison escape attempt. One student declared, “He’s currently unresponsive,” prompting the others to spring into action, checking for a pulse, performing chest compressions, and administering shocks.

The scenario took a humorous turn when another student, playing the role of Nandipha, burst into the room, frantically yelling, “Thabo, Thabo, Thabo, please! I’m also a doctor!” The “doctor” was comically dragged out and asked to wait while the team continued treating Thabo.

The video, uploaded by Dr. Marvin Jansen, head of the Clinical Skills Centre, has entertained local internet users, with many praising the students’ Oscar-worthy performance. Some were surprised by the choice of Thabo as the simulated patient, but most appreciated the creativity and humor brought to the simulation.

Thabo Bester and Nandipha Magudumana are currently in custody, awaiting trial for their alleged crimes. The case has garnered significant attention, particularly after a Netflix docuseries, Beauty and the Bester, detailed Thabo’s crimes and prison escape. Nandipha claims she was coerced into helping Thabo escape, but authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding her involvement.
