South African Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa’s Tragic Death in Paris: New Details Emerge
French authorities have released further details regarding the tragic death of Nkosinathi “Nathi” Mthethwa, South Africa’s ambassador to France, who was found dead in the inner courtyard of the Hyatt Regency Etoile hotel in Paris on the morning of Tuesday, September 30, 2025.
Nathi had been reported missing by his wife, Philisiwe Buthelezi, just a day earlier after receiving an alarming message from him expressing suicidal intent.
According to Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau, Mthethwa checked into the hotel on September 29 at approximately 4:30 PM, booking a room on the 22nd floor. The investigation revealed that the window’s anti-opening safety mechanism in his room had been forcibly opened, with scissors found at the scene.
Beccuau confirmed there were no signs of a struggle, nor traces of medication or narcotics, and the preliminary evidence suggests Nathi fell from the window. His wife told investigators that she last saw him before he left for a cocktail party and later received a troubling message around 9:30 PM apologizing and expressing his intent to take his own life.
The Paris prosecutor’s office has launched an inquiry into the cause of death, and while French authorities currently suspect suicide, the situation remains under investigation.
News24 reporters visited the hotel on the day of the incident and noted that staff had been instructed not to speak to the media. One security manager described the hotel as being in crisis mode, while guests appeared largely unaware of the tragedy. An American guest, Keven Fowl, recalled seeing police officers around but did not initially connect their presence to the ambassador’s death.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) officially confirmed Nathi’s passing, describing it as a national loss. President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed deep sorrow, calling Nathi’s death untimely and traumatic. President Ramaphosa praised Nathi’s lifetime of public service, which included roles as Minister of Police and Minister of Arts and Culture before his diplomatic appointment in December 2023.
Nathi’s death has shocked diplomats and government officials, with tributes pouring in from colleagues and leaders. DIRCO highlighted Nathi’s efforts to strengthen bilateral ties between South Africa and France, underscoring his dedication to advancing South Africa’s interests abroad. The ministry extended condolences to his wife, children, and loved ones.
As French authorities continue their investigation, calls have emerged for a parallel probe by South African authorities to ensure transparency and accountability.
Experts suggest invoking international legal cooperation mechanisms to gather evidence and conduct further inquiries into Nathi’s recent activities. This tragic incident has raised questions about the mental health pressures faced by diplomats and the need for greater support systems within government roles.
