Prince Sotashe: Taxi Industry Beginnings to Pioneering a New Era in Maskandi Music
Sixolile Sotashe, widely known as Prince, is a rising star in the DJ world, making waves with his unique approach to the maskandi genre.
Although maskandi is deeply embedded in Zulu tradition, Prince’s connection to the genre is unconventional—rooted in his past within the taxi industry.
In an honest conversation, he admitted that he initially disliked maskandi music but eventually grew to appreciate its profound meaning. “I won’t lie, I didn’t expect the genre to be like this. I took a leap of faith, and everything worked out,” he shared.
Prince sees his work as essential to keeping maskandi music alive and relevant in modern times. For him, every artist brings something distinctive to the table, and his strength lies in how he delivers the music. “The genre is still in its early days—we haven’t yet seen it reach its full potential,” he reflected, emphasizing his belief in maskandi’s future growth.
As a DJ on the rise, Prince holds ambitious dreams. He aspires to expand his role beyond being a DJ, noting that his journey began with uncertainty but ultimately led to success. While staying discreet about specifics, Prince revealed that he and his team are working on two major projects, pouring their efforts into bringing them to life.
When it comes to musical inspiration, Prince credits artists like Menzi, Khuzani, and his latest favorite, Shenge, for fueling his passion and shaping his craft. Despite the challenges that fame can bring, Prince finds his journey rewarding, filled with support and love from his fans. Reflecting on his path, he said, “Everything that happened shaped me into who I am today. I hope my decisions continue guiding me in the right direction.”
Outside of music, Prince’s talents extend further—he’s an excellent cook, a skill he learned from his grandmother, and a devoted soccer enthusiast. At one point, he dreamed of becoming a professional soccer player and still finds time to enjoy the sport despite his busy schedule.
To aspiring DJs, Prince offers advice rooted in experience: “Consistency and decision-making are key. If you doubt it, then it’s not the right path. Work hard and work smart.” He also stresses the importance of staying grounded and resisting the pressure of the industry. With his passion, creativity, and determination, Prince isn’t just playing maskandi music—he’s redefining it and ensuring the genre’s future is bright.
