Winter Shedding? Here’s What You Can Use At Home To Stop My Hair From Falling
Winter can be tough on your hair. The cold air, indoor heating and lack of moisture can leave your scalp feeling dry and itchy, while making it seem like you’re losing more hair than usual. If you’ve noticed extra strands on your brush, pillow or in the shower, you’re definitely not alone.
The good news is you don’t always need expensive treatments to give your hair some extra love. Sometimes the best remedies are already sitting in your kitchen or bathroom cupboard. Here are a few simple home essentials that can help nourish your scalp, reduce breakage and keep your hair looking healthy all winter long.
1. Lukewarm water and cold rinse
I stopped using boiling hot showers. I noticed that hot water strips the oils from your scalp and makes hair brittle. Now I wash with lukewarm water from the tap and do a final rinse with cold water. It seals the strands and my scalp feels less itchy.
2. Kitchen oils for scalp massages
Once a week or two I take olive oil or coconut oil from the kitchen. I warm a little in a cup, then massage it into my scalp with my fingers for 5 minutes. This has helped me loosen dry flakes and gets blood moving. I leave it on while I do chores, then wash it out. Less itching equals to less shedding.
3. DIY conditioner with stuff from the pantry
After shampoo, I mix plain yogurt, honey and a bit of olive oil. I slap it on the ends, leave it for 20 minutes, then rinse. The yogurt softens, the honey locks in moisture, and the oil stops breakage. My hair feels way less dry and snap-prone. You can also opt to use the hair mayonnaise.
4. Old t-shirt instead of towel
Regular towels are rough and cause friction. I use an old cotton t-shirt to blot my hair dry. It cuts down on breakage when my hair is most fragile — right after washing in winter.
5. Satin scarf or pillowcase from the linen closet
Cotton beanies and pillowcases pull moisture out of hair overnight. I swapped to a satin scarf I already had, and I sleep on a satin pillowcase. In the morning there’s way less tangles and hair on the pillow.
The shift was simple: protect what I have instead of waiting to fix breakage later. With just kitchen and bedroom essentials, I’m seeing less hair fall and more moisture.
Winter will still be dry, but my hair is holding up a lot better.
