Moshe Ndiki’s Mgidi Outfit Sparks Debate Over Cultural Appropriation

Last Updated: August 11, 2026By

Moshe Ndiki has found himself at the centre of a social media debate after a video of the actor and media personality at a Mgidi celebration over the weekend sparked mixed reactions online.

The celebration, held over the weekend of 8 August, brought together friends and guests for what appeared to be a festive girls’ weekend. But it was Moshe’s outfit and behaviour at the gathering that quickly became a talking point on social media.

Some users criticised his look, arguing that it was inappropriate for a culturally significant occasion such as a Mgidi, while others defended him and questioned why his clothing choices had become a matter for public debate.

The conversation was particularly divided among Xhosa-speaking users, with some suggesting that there are certain expectations around how people should conduct themselves at traditional and cultural gatherings.

One social media user, however, came to Moshe’s defence, praising his personality and the way he handles public scrutiny. “Moshe is a cool guy, like Lebo Molax. They understand prejudice and hate from people but their attitude in life just makes it hard for you to even find something to hate and judge them. As a guy, I wouldn’t mind having them as friends. Never change Moshe, and never feel entitled because you’re famous.”

Another user questioned the reaction to Moshe’s appearance, asking why women were seemingly applauding everything at the event. “I am not saying you are wrong or right Ntwana (gent), is your decision and you have freewill. My question is, why ladies ziqwabela yonke into (clapping for everything).”

Others were less complimentary about the outfit, with one commenter writing: “A man’s thigh does not look attractive ka pose I’m sorry.”

Another took a more light-hearted approach, suggesting that Moshe had a particular style that his fans preferred. “Moshe my guy you right and look good when you wearing your tighty suite pants not this…We love.”

Moshe has not directly addressed the criticism or explained his outfit. Instead, he appeared to reference the weekend in a social media post, writing: “Deadbeat dads ka Sesotho. This girls weekend was just what I needed yho enkosi Mgidi ka Liwa sanalam.”

His post suggests that, regardless of the online conversation, he enjoyed the gathering and the time spent with those around him.

The debate highlights the complicated space public figures often occupy, particularly when personal style intersects with cultural expectations. For some social media users, Moshe’s look was simply a fashion choice at a festive gathering. For others, the setting mattered, with questions about what is considered appropriate at culturally significant occasions.

As the video continued circulating, the conversation became less about one outfit and more about the expectations placed on people — particularly public figures — when they attend traditional and cultural celebrations.
