From “I’m Quitting” to a New Chapter: DJ Abu Launches The Abu Experience

Last Updated: August 20, 2026By

DJ Abu, born Abusiswe Mafu, has announced The Abu Experience, making it clear that what appeared to be a farewell from deejaying is instead the beginning of a new chapter.

A few days ago, DJ Abu said she was quitting deejaying after posting a snippet from a previous interview.

The video spread quickly, with the comments filled with questions from fans who were not ready to see her step away. Then, just days later, she posted something completely different.

Taking to her Facebook page, she wrote that a new chapter begins and that The Abu Experience is more than just an event.

“It is a celebration of growth, gratitude, and the incredible people who made the journey possible,” she wrote.

She also thanked everyone who has been part of her story so far and said it is time to create new memories together.

DJ Abu grew up in Khayelitsha in Cape Town, where her love for music and performance began. She works as a club DJ, entertainer and dancer, building her name by connecting with crowds and keeping dancefloors full.

She began learning how to DJ under her mentor, DJ Mara, and launched her brand in 2015. Between 2017 and 2018, she became a regular at Cape Town venues such as Rands CPT, Ace Groover Lounge and Solly Laroca. Those nights helped her find her sound and showed audiences that she could read a room and bring energy to any set.

Her breakthrough came in 2018 when she was crowned the winner of the iPotsoyi Festival SA Next Big Thing. The competition was decided by a public vote and took her name beyond Cape Town for the first time.

After that, she continued building her career, with DJ Abu taking on a role as a resident DJ at Radio KC in Paarl. The radio work introduced her to a new audience and led to more bookings around the country, including dates in Durban and other major music hubs.

With each gig, her reputation continued to grow. People came to expect high energy, good music selection and a space where everyone feels welcome.

The first edition of The Abu Experience is happening on Sunday, October 25, at The Terrace in Salt River, Cape Town. Doors open from 17:00.

According to DJ Abu, the night is about more than music. It is about celebrating how far she has come and the people who have supported her since 2015. Tickets are available online at Qkt.io/THEABUEXPERIENCE.

For a long time, DJing was seen as a space for men only, with women having to work harder to get booked and to be taken seriously.

That is changing. Female DJs in South Africa are now headlining events, running their own nights and touring nationally, and DJ Abu is part of that shift.

Coming from Khayelitsha and working her way to radio and national bookings, she is showing young girls that the decks are open to them too. The focus is no longer on who is behind the decks, but on the skill and energy they bring.

DJ Abu says this is only the start. With The Abu Experience now launched, the plan is to grow the brand, take it to more cities and work with local artists and talent.

If you saw the quitting clip and thought it was the end, this is the answer. It was not an ending, it was a reset.

The Abu Experience has begun, and DJ Abu is not slowing down. She is creating the next chapter.
