Whitney Houston Barbie Doll Pays Tribute to Her Iconic ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ Look

Whitney Houston’s legendary style has officially been immortalised in Barbie form.

Mattel has unveiled its first-ever Barbie doll celebrating the late music icon, with the collector’s doll recreating one of Houston’s most recognisable looks from the 1987 music video for I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me).

The doll was unveiled as part of celebrations around what would have been Houston’s 63rd birthday and arrives during a year of major tributes to the singer and her enduring influence on music and popular culture.

The attention to detail is unmistakably inspired by Houston’s colourful 1980s aesthetic. The doll wears a purple tank dress, statement earrings and vibrant makeup, while a microphone stand completes the performance-inspired look.

The choice of the I Wanna Dance With Somebody era is particularly fitting. Released in May 1987 as the first single from Houston’s second studio album, Whitney, the song went on to reach number one around the world and became one of the defining hits of her career.

Nathan Baynard, Vice President and Head of Barbie at Mattel, said the company wanted the doll to celebrate the joy and inspiration Houston brought to millions of fans.

“Whitney Houston’s music has been the soundtrack to countless moments for fans around the world. Barbie is proud to honor her extraordinary legacy with the latest addition to the Barbie Signature Series.”

The collaboration is also deeply personal. The doll was developed with Pat Houston, Whitney’s sister-in-law and executor of her estate, who has described the project as an emotional way of continuing to honour the singer’s legacy.

“Today, we celebrate more than the release of a doll, we celebrate the enduring legacy of an icon. The new Whitney Houston Barbie honours a woman whose voice, grace, beauty, and spirit inspired generations around the world,” said Pat.

The idea of a Whitney Houston doll had reportedly been discussed for around two decades. An earlier concept was connected to The Bodyguard, but that project never came to fruition during Houston’s lifetime.

Now, decades after Houston became a global superstar, her influence continues to reach new generations.

From her extraordinary voice to her instantly recognisable fashion moments, Houston left behind a visual and musical legacy that continues to inspire. The Barbie is another way that one of pop culture’s most celebrated performers is being remembered.

And with her purple dress, bold accessories and microphone at the ready, this Whitney Houston Barbie is quite literally ready to dance with somebody.
